The oldest vines on the estate, the Massal 1945 blocks planted by owner Gabriel Edwards's grandmother, Luz, have had nearly 80 years to send their ungrafted roots deep into this parent rock, extracting minerals that no young vine could access. Because these are massal selections (propagated from the actual old vines rather than from nursery clones), they retain the genetic complexity of pre-industrial viticulture and are uniquely adapted to this specific patch of volcanic-granitic earth. The granitic/volcanic soils impart a lifted, crystalline quality to the fruit, dark plum, blackberry, and mulberry with savory herbs, iron, and a long, finely grained tannic finish. Rather than the plush, opulent style of Argentine Malbec, this is leaner and more structural, shaped by stressed old vines and mineral-rich ancient earth. It is, in a very literal sense, the geological history of the Andes in a glass.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0627/4341/2950/files/malbec-massal-1945-clos-de-luz-2-547x600.jpg?v=1782423058
