The name translates as “old mound.” It refers to a rise on the estate topped by the ancient square tower shown on the label. The idea was to offer an everyday wine with the profile of the Esporão Reserva, minus the barrel and bottle aging. Australian winemaker David Baverstock arrived in 1991 and helped shape modern Portuguese winemaking. Under him, temperature controlled stainless steel helped make the unoaked, fruit forward Monte Velho a best seller in Portugal. The red blends native grapes from the estate with fruit from neighboring growers. Some of those grower partnerships go back more than fifteen years and span the Alentejo’s subregions. Expect ripe dark fruit, gentle spice and a soft, warm-climate texture. It’s a snapshot of the Alentejo in the glass.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Esporao","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":67761786355926,"sku":null,"price":19.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0627\/4341\/2950\/files\/mvt_2025_350x350_1a38b4fb-0c15-4573-83e4-d47fea133fa5.png?v=1792789881","url":"https:\/\/winklerandsamuels.com\/products\/esporao-monte-velho","provider":"winklerandsamuels","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
