Niepoort Napoles Twisted Tinto 2021
For centuries this part of Portugal has been known only for its port, but today, many of these Portuguese winemakers are beginning to make red and white table wines with the same grapes that have traditionally only been used for ports. The Niepoort family has been in the wine business since 1842, for many years making their traditional Ports from purchased fruit. Over time they were able to acquire their own vineyards, the Napoles vineyard was added in 1987. The still wines have evolved considerably since the days of the late 90's and early 2000s when big, powerful, oaky wines were the trend. Today, the wines are very much in keeping with today's more progressive drinking wheelhouse. Namely, lower alcohols (often 11-13%), lighter, fresher, more drinkable-styled wines with minimal new oak influence. This is a purple-red-hued wine, it reveals aromas of blood and raspberry, accompanied by notes of ink and black fruit. Dry and juicy on the palate, this modern wine lingers on its fruit flavors.
