Nikka Whisky's history began in 1934 with the establishment of "Dai Nippon Kaju Co., Ltd." in Yoichi, Hokkaido. Masataka Taketsuru (the father of Japanese Whisky) was born in 1894, in Takehara Town (now Takehara City), Hiroshima Prefecture, as the third son of a sake-brewing family. He grew up with the sake brewery as his playground, learning about the challenges of sake production from a young age. He later traveled to Scotland and studied at a university in Glasgow before getting hands on experience in Speyside and Campbeltown. He also met and married a Scotswoman, Rita, who convinced him to move back to Japan where he helped open the first Whisky distillery for Suntory before building his own distillery in Hokkaido. The complex formula is created by blending more than 100 different batches of malt and grain whiskies. After blending, the whisky is filled into used barrels and matured for another few months. This "marriage" process harmonizes all components in the formula, resulting in a mellow taste.
