Buchegger Grüner Veltliner

Buchegger is a small, deeply traditional Kremstal family estate founded in 1893 and rooted in the village of Gedersdorf, with vineyards the local monasteries were already naming, Holzgasse and Moosburgerin among them, some eight hundred years ago. Walter Buchegger, the sixth generation, took over from his father in 1994 and ran it until his death in 2018; his wife Silke Mayr manages the estate today. Roughly eleven to fifteen hectares sit on conglomerate capped by deep, chalky loess, farmed under Austria’s rigorous Integrated Production standard, with no herbicides or insecticides for decades and vines grown entirely from the estate’s own massale selection. Holzgasse is a single site: a steep, southeast-facing, terraced hilltop of pure loess at around 1,000 feet, its vines twenty to fifty years old. The wine is classic Kremstal Grüner, ripe, powerful, and dry, with the loess giving it breadth and a spicy, yellow-fruited depth over firm acidity.
