Valle Dell'Acate Il Frappato

Frappato is Sicily's most charming red grape, and the family at Valle dell'Acate make one of its purest expressions. The Vittoria DOC would allow a blend, but they bottle this at a full 100 percent so the variety can speak for itself. The vines grow on black soil scattered with white limestone pebbles near the town of Acate, farmed organically and fermented with native yeasts. The wine is pale ruby with notes of raspberry and wild strawberry, pomegranate, violet and a touch of sage. Tannins are soft, the acidity is bright, and it is lovely with a slight chill. If you love Pinot Noir, this is your Sicilian.
